Bards Tale II, you kept having to go back to some sage asshole and feeding him gold to get the next quest or clues. Ended up the bad guy. Might & Magic II, you'd go to various lords in castles for quests until they ran out. One of them would take all your shit and ruin your game if you did all his quests, dump you down some chute with nothing. Missle Command, maybe?

As I pointed out in an article here, Why are light switches so hard to use? there are people who would complain a single button device was too much.

I think they even did something like that in a cartoon. It might have been in the New Yorker and before people criticize me, I didn't say it was in the New Yorker, that's just where I think I saw it, with a caption something like the guy saying, "Let's hear them complain this is too complicated."

But they probably will, anyway.

I said something similar in part, which Jonsey placed on Caltrops front page in July, 2011, featuring the YouTube video I made on December 30, 2007, that when my Internet connection went down, I'm unable to play Half Life 2 or Portal because my computer can't phone home to Valve's servers. (I have been told Valve has fixed some of this since then), but the fact remains that you cannot use The Orange Box at all without an Internet connection even if all you're going to play is Portal or the Half Life 2 games, none of these require an Internet connection to play (since you play them single player). But without an Internet connection and a Steam Account - and a login to Valve's servers to validate you - the games are locked and will not start up even though they're loaded on your computer and would work even if you'd never even heard of the Internet.

One of the comments made was that "Paul is dead" as far as Paul McCartney being a good artist. (Sorry, I just couldn't resist!) That he just happens to be popular, as the prior poster sardonically gave an imagined quote by him, "Oh, gotta go cash the latest million dollar royalty check."

But what is art? What constitutes a good artist? And how do you tell?

I create a story in my book to be able to explain my own thoughts, and I'll give you the back story here. In my story, people are dead, existing in an afterlife. One guy there, discovers a bunch of Holocaust survivors were killed in a plane crash, decides to do a nasty practical joke (knowing what will happen), by having a bald guy wearing a Nazi uniform hold up a sign reading, "The Nazis didn't make enough of you Kikes into soap and lampshades." So they can see it when they first arrive in the Afterlife.

This clearly insensitive note causes exactly what the guy expected: a firestorm of protest resulting in a riot.

So then, the story's main star, Supervisor 246, says on a TV show that he thinks the sign was a work of art. A reporter questions him.
"Art?"
"Yes ma'am, I think this is a work of art. I don't agree with it, but I do believe it is art."
"But you don't believe what it says?"
"No, I don't."
"Why do you think it's a work of art?"
"I think art is that which moves people to experience emotion. Since this sign moved a number of people into so much emotion that they got [arrested], I'd say it qualifies."

And that is how I would define it.

"Art is that which moves people to experience emotion." Good artists do it really well.

I think of them like Stephen King books. They're basically adolescent stories but they're pretty enjoyable because he's an entertaining writer.

Before everybody goes all Proust on me I ain't trying to claim Rowling or King make great literature, just like I won't claim Paul McCartney is a great songwriter. All three of them would probably shrug and say "welp, I tried my best, gonna go cash this million dollar royalty check now."

But yes the movies are awful. Filthy Critic nailed it when he called them book reports by a first grader. "And then this happened and then that happened and then the feather blew up and it was funny." Just scene after scene of events falling completely flat. I can only assume the books had a brilliant 3rd person narrator for them to become so popular, kind of like Discworld where all the movies are terrible when it's stripped of everything but the mise en scene plot.

Not sure how closely it followed the book, but what struck me is how every movie was nothing but filler leading up to the final movie where Voldemort would come back and take everything over. Then when the final movie comes around, Voldemort takes everything over...off camera. The entire point of the last 4 movies, and you're just told "Oh yeah there's a fascist government now and the villain took over everything", not showing that so the movie can instead concentrate on Harry camping out in the woods for 3 hours so he can ponder a riddle, never figure it out, and eventually have a ghost just wander by to tell him the answer.
