After loving The Wire (which I did not like at first, but kept on hdd), I was excited, excited about this show. I wanted to like it.

The dialog sounded fake too often (boiling flask!), situations were way contrived, and characters' behaviour is too over-the-top (sell my husband pot and I will call the DEA! -- fwiw, I stopped watching Brotherhood, which was recommended to me by Nick Cassavetes via High Stakes Poker, when the trophy wife gatewayed from pot to coke and then abandoned the family cat in the countryside because she couldn't stand its meowing).

You know I could love you no more than I would my own brother, so with that I trust you know I am responding to your points, and not coming off as snotty as humanly possible because I think there is something wrong with you, like what most people do on every other forum in the history of civilization.

I wouldn't say the dialog is snappy or jumps off the page, but it didn't distract me. I mean, what really drives this show is the performance of Bryan Cranston, of course, but a few episodes in I was shocked at the amazing performance of Aaron Paul, as well. I don't watch a lot of TV, but I can not think of another show with such strong lead and supporting actors. There is joy to be found in simply viewing their performances. Those two are sooooo good, and it's completely unexpected. The dad from Malcolm in the Middle and one of a thousand disposable kids who look like they ought to be in a boy band are the two best actors in the world right now.

There is an element to the show that I love that many others may not - at times, Mister Walt White is a superhero. But I love that about the show. I do not read at a grade 30 level so I am not going to pretend that I am completely up on the chemistry. My major at Syracuse was Paper & Pulp Science Engineering, so I should be up on the chemistry, but I did very poorly, so I am not. If I was forced to pick between "the chemistry in the show is awesome" and "the chemistry in the show is hack-the-Gibson-this-is-Unix!-I-know-this" I would pick the latter, because I would be right 99.99% of the time. But it feels right. And they don't allow him to MacGuyver his way out of situations every episode.

(I'm trying to decide if Breaking Bad is better than Dexter. For me, one of these two shows is the second-best show ever. Dexter gives you the candy at the end of every episode. It's reliable. You know it's coming. It's fucking awesome. I will define Walt White using his chemistry to solve problems as Breaking Bad's candy and it is not always present. But that means there's a real thrill when you realize you're going to be watching one of the episodes where the protagonist does something amazing.)

And his wife is one of the most beautiful women on television, so that excuses the scene where she confronts Jesse. But honestly, 9 shows out of 10 don't have her *69 the suspicious number. There have been a few times where Breaking Bad has set the table nicely for a stupid television trope and then either gone a different direction or defeated the trope instantly. There is honestly a level of craftsmanship in the show that is missing from most media.

SPOILER! The scene where the mirrored paper towel dispenser gets punched is probably the single greatest moment that has ever been broadcast over the air, except for this, this, and this.

oh and Archie Bunker flushing the toilet
