Every Grantland writer is fucking terrible, but let's take a look at their video game guy.
A question I have been asking myself lately: What if, of all the experiences video games make theoretically available to us, a simulated superhero experience turns out to be what, at the end of the day, video games do best? Forget the young game designer toiling away on her surgery simulation game, the ambitious triple-A game designer trying to figure out how to bring depth and moral probity to the shooter, the indie game designer trying to capture Super Mario lightning in a more contemporary bottle. Forget all that, because nothing these intelligent, hardworking designers will come up can ever be better than being Batman.
Let's ignore the fact that it took him 105 words to make that point. That's just Grantland. They added some Grantland spice on what he wrote and it got bigger and harder to follow. Every piece on that site is as overwritten as that. He later says:
The skeptical reader is probably wondering: Why, if video games are the perfect medium for superhero simulation, are most superhero games so terrible? Well, why has LucasArts never managed to make an Indiana Jones game as good as Uncharted or a Star Wars game as good as Halo?
(Telling the reader what he is thinking is another Grantland feature.)
Guys, why isn't Dark Forces as good as Halo? I really wish that the second half of Dark Forces was going through the exact same maps from the first part backwards.
Also, Indiana Jones and Dark Forces guys: SUPER HEROES. Anyway, this has been another installment of how Grantland is the worst website on the Internet at the moment.
