I'm not sure that Bastion does it right, but I still think the mechanic is actually pretty neat. Most types of point based games have some kind of risk-reward scaffolding. Bullet-scrubbing, specific attack styles in DMC, etc. Exposing these levers to the player outside of the gameplay is something I haven't seen before, at least expressed like that. Anyway, even if you do everything, as I did, the game isn't very long.

I guess it's an okay solution. They use more or less the same system in Forza, only they give you access to all the options from the outset. I can easily imagine that changing in future iterations, though :(

You must have a level two garage to unlock manual transmission.

I think the blocking mechanic is a bit finicky, but the weapon switching and rolling and everything else is great. The Carbine in particular is neat. The other weapons are more typical action RPG fare. I used it along side the Musket for most of the end game. The Pike was also a lot of fun, but the Hammer, Bow, Repeater, and Machete all seemed pretty dull.

The hammer gets a little more interesting once you buy the charge attack, same with the repeater and homing bullets. How much mileage you get out of the pistols will depend entirely on how much of a Master Higgins you are, though it's worth playing the quick draw minigame at least a couple times, just for fun. The mortar is a beautiful explosion machine, but you don't get it until fairly late in the campaign, so you might not be inclined to abandon one of your tried-and-true just to start all over again with unproven tech. Then again, letting go and moving on does seem to be a theme of the game.
