Thank you, Roop, for posting that video about the construction kit for Skyrim. And my biggest comment was, "Oh great, yet another goddam scripting language" when the announcer mentioned that this construction kit had a new scripting language called Papyrus.
Do we really need to unleash yet another scripting language on the world? We don't already have enough with Lua, PHP, Python, Perl, Basic, Pascal, Java, Haskell, Scheme, Lisp, and probably a dozen others I've forgotten or are not aware of. Plus the specialized languages like Hugo, TADS and a few others used for writing Adventure Games.
For one thing, unless you have some really esoteric constructs you have to handle, I don't see why some pre-existing language isn't satisfactory for allowing user applications to manipulate the environment. Most of these, in one form or another, tend to be stripped versions of C compilers or close equivalents of C compilers because the language the designer added often borrows from C.
Plus there's an added point, if you use a standardized scripting module you have the advantage that the language processor has had a lot of people banging on it with various applications and thus it has had lots of real-world testing and the possibility of undetected bugs is reduced. Also, a standardized scripting language means there are thousands, to tens of thousands or more, of other people who know how to program in the language. This allows someone having a problem to ask for assistance and find it. Put out some new scripting language and all that prior experience in other languages is gone, and it's a long wait before the level of experience in development is there. It's reinventing the wheel all over again. |
