What you're talking about as far as skipping over parts you've already played to jump to parts you haven't or have played less, I'm totally cool with that. Like how after you completed a chapter in Half-Life 2 you could jump right to it from the main menu if you wanted to replay just that part. But it's only after you've played and that's the way I think it should be, since the burden is on them to produce something that will be entertaining. Not to hand me a pile of levels and say there's probably something in there worth $50, figure it out. They're already asking me to give 10-40 hours of my time to a game, and then they want me spend more to configure it to be fun? Fuck that.

'me' 'me' 'me' no one is saying you have to do shit.

I'm saying that. And I gave you the real-world example of Bastion. I want it to be considered a Bad Idea that should not be reproduced. Don't make the player do your job, game designers that will never read this!

there's always gonna be a normal mode that'll be the best thing that can get through testing. I'm saying it hurts no one to have other options for other people who want to see the story but combat isn't interesting to them, or to have the combat be tough enough the game turns into a roguelike (maybe as a new game+). I don't think there's a real threat to your play experience if they add those in last minute, or as a patch later, or whatever.

Since when was I against difficulty levels? You want your target audience to include people of varying skill levels? Ok with me. Even non-video game games have things like handicaps. And Jerry beat me to it below in suggesting that they be something designed in from the ground up. How can you tweak game rules to increase or decrease difficulty and do it well if they were never designed with that in mind in the first place?

The only thing I'm against is implementing a button press to completely skip entire gameplay sections, because I don't want to it turn into an excuse to not make a game better. I offer the real-world example of LA Noire that I think did this several times. They gave you a GTA-style 1940s Los Angeles that you could drive through or teleport directly to mission locations. Driving was fucking boring, but rather than make it fun you get a teleport button. It's a shitty shortcut.

One thing you seem to be arguing in favor of is some sort of books on tape version of video games where people who like a good story (haha) can enjoy it without playing anything. Well shit, why not just have a tester record a playthrough or put a link to twitch.tv in the main menu.
