Beginner's tip: Tarkas are the "joe average" race, not humans.

This thing is unplayable on anything but the 2D star map. Why does anyone think true 3D space is a good idea?

Because it was the one cool special effect in "Star Trek: Generations." Spiral galaxies are manageable.

When will 4X developers realize that MOO1 had exactly the right amount of colony management? Has morale ever improved a 4X game?

Umm... I'm drawing a blank. Terrible design decision adding that.

Everything seems so obtuse. Do I want lasers? Ballistics? Missiles?

Weapon fire in this game is rendered as 3D things moving through space, so the layout of your ships and their turrets play a role in your choice. Lasers are the best choice for direct damage early game, but laser cannons become obsolete (red, green, violet, phasers). Missile launchers always fire your latest missile tech, have long range and tracking, but they have a slow reload speed and can be shot down by point defense. (Protip: research VRM tech in the mass weapons tree to unlock point defense, including laser point defense, unless the RNG decided you don't get point defense this game. No, I don't know what they were thinking). Mass weapons do damage and bump the target off course, which does more than you would think since the game uses a newtonian physics engine for ship movement. By lone ships here and there, mass weapons underperform. En masse (har!) they can neutralize a ship by sending it spinning out of control, especially a spinal mount weapon ship.

Ship design in this game is deeper than it seems at first glance.

Why did my fleet of 15 cruisers only show 2 in battle?

You need to research Strikeforce CnC to create command ships. With a command ship you can increase the number of ships on the battlefield at a time and arrange their starting formation from the starmap. As ships fall, reinforcements warp in near your CnC ship. Not having CnC means your ships warp in from the edges in a slow trickle.

Do I want to develop infrastructure over population?

You want to get the climate hazard to 0 ASAP. Until the colony is terraformed, it drains your economy (though it does refuel ships). Sending a constant stream of colony ships will artificially boost the population to speed up terraforming and infrastructure building. There is a cruiser-size colonizer called the "biome colonizer" that you can unlock after suspended animation (RNG willing) that instantly lowers climate hazard by a chunk.

Protip: Build defensive satellites around EVERY colony with a working infrastructure. Just because the rival empires aren't anywhere near doesn't mean the RNG won't dump an invasion event on your ass.

If you want balanced perfection, go play GalCiv 2. If you want the game Gratuitous Space Battles should have been, play Sword of the Stars.
