Not true for King of Dragon Pass. I have no explanation for why KoDP was as fun as it was, but it's essentially a 4x with emergent storytelling done as close to right as has been seen so far. You have the possibility for genuinely different playthroughs all focused entirely on story, you have enough events that you'll never see them all in ten playthroughs, and you have a sufficiently different mindset required that the diegesis actually matters. Pair that with a means to keep track of past events and not just their effects (oh look, +15 to the relations counter, how exciting) and you have the possibility for an overarching story to emerge.
Except that KoDP games always follow a certain core formula, I suppose. Still, makes up for the somewhat cartoony setting. Go play it if you haven't, you may experience childlike wonder or just find it a different kind of game than those you're familiar with.
The Paradox grand strats provide a drier version of emergent storytelling that mostly relies on player ARRs, but if you're a big fat history hobbyist it's something to jerk off into for when all your copies of Decline and Fall have the pages stuck together at the good parts. "Oh Mark Antony, tell us how honorable Brutus was again! YES."
Dwarf Fortress has the spergiest variety, but some find it amusing enough and use it to fill the gaping hole in their lives. This is the player and not the game, and absolutely what you describe except it does not rely on glitches. |
