Here, I'll share my awful story with you Jonesy:
When I was like 11 years old and in a broken home, I was terrible at JRPG's and lacked the patience to grind on crappy combat systems. So I cheated, I cheated like crazy with a Game Genie. But Game Genies had a sneaky trick in RPG's where you couldn't save to the ROM memory of the cartridge if you were using a Game Genie, since you could just borrow a friend's, give yourself insane stats, then give it back to them I guess.
So I played through the entirety of Phantasy Star III on a single save file. Got up to the very end JUST BEFORE I met the last boss at the very end of the game. I had tried this like five times already, but this time I was going to finish. I didn't care that Phantasy Star III was considered the worst in the franchise. I was going to see it through to the end.
Then I had to go out with my alcoholic dad on his court appointed time to take his kids out to a nice dinner. I got back home. By now the cartridge on top of the game genie in the Genesis left on for over 48 hours thing was making the cartridges hot. I mean really hot. I in fact commented on this fact several times.
My little brother didn't believe me, I guess, because he pressed the back of his hand against the Game Genie cartridge to test my theory. Well, he must have jostled the cartridge where it contacted the Game Genie, because the whole fucking thing froze. FROZE. I wanted to beat him within an inch of his life.
12 years later, I watched the Phantasy Star 3 endings on Youtube. 11 year old me would have been happy with it, but I was not impressed. |
