Anyway, tell me what you think the missing ingredient is in terms of the shit these people learn if you can think of something that doesn't boil down to 'samples of a quality work.'
Game design:
Have some fucking idea of what came before and what did and didn't work for the genre you are in. Every single game designer in the world should be able to speak to the specific case of why X-COM was a masterpiece and why Terror From the Deep sucked dick. Every single one - regardless if you are making iOS slop or console games or a game that is actually called XCOM.
Play every meaningful PC game from 1980 to 1996. The limitations in computing power and storage meant that creativity, design and an innate sense of fun had to grab a player's attention. A lot of developers and designers seem to think that having played every SNES game is the same thing. It is absolutely not, and the reason is because the NES, SNES and Genesis were all designed to try to make Donkey Kong Country. You can count the interesting games on those consoles that weren't sports or side-scrollers on one hand. The PC is the only platform that matters.
Game writing:
Unlike design, don't experience what everyone else is experiencing. Don't rent The Matrix. Don't bother with any fantasy. There are 100 people who think they have an awesome D&D campaign in their heads that is really different! Do not be one of them. Get as much interesting life experience as possible and listen to everyone you encounter. Keep company around assholes. Make friends out of people whose only quality is that they are reprehensible. Lose. Why are all social justice games incomprehensible and laughable? Because they are made in a pointless, vapid echo chamber. Nobody under the age of 50 ought to be writing for games. Nobody under the age of 25 has a single interesting thing to say in their lives just in speaking, much less writing.
or just make more games with realistic guns and be part of the wave of sour-faced children that thinks they will be the first to rip off The Red Wedding in a video game, you fat fucks, I don't give a shit
