The Apologetics, and those who don't by Commander Tansin A. Darcos 12/14/2013, 5:04pm PST
You find in various songs where someone speaks about a former or lost love, and you sometimes get those who apologize for their mistakes, grovel deeply as they try to find the words to show that their errors or mistakes were not personal, or that they hope that somehow they can win forgiveness or mercy from whomever it was that they've wronged. I'll call these, "the Apologetics."

Then there are some who aren't so much apologizing as trying to show that despite whatever it is they've done, there's still a lot between them and the other person, and perhaps there is room to talk, and, maybe, get back together. I'll call these, "the Neutrals"

And you get those who, admit, often with sadness, that they realize the relationship is over, and they have to move on. I'll call these, "the end."

I'd like to take a look at, and possibly a listen to, some of my favorites in all three categories. And maybe you have some you like that I haven't thought of. Or maybe you disagree with my selections.

The Apologetics
* The Chairmen of the Board, Give Me Just a Little More Time. I think he's trying to say that he wants to be her lover but he's a bit more responsible and thinks they're too young, and if they rush this it may mess things up. But he doesn't want to lose her over this. Or he could be trying to tell her that just because their first time was not very good does not mean it won't get better if they try again. It's hard to say and I'm not sure which. So maybe it's the reverse gender of a song that probably represented more typical practice, Keep Your Hands To Yourself where the woman is telling the guy she ain't even going to kiss or hug him unless they get married. Sweepstakes odds that since she ain't putting out and ain't even showing him affection that she's never had a guy hang around longer than a few weeks to a month or two. Too many women like sex and if she thinks her pussy is so valuable that the guy has to buy it without getting so much as a free sample, well, she'll find out that there are lots more probably even nicer women who are less parsimonious with their favors.
* Player, Baby Come Back. This is a pure apologetic, and is probably the most groveling song ever written. This guy didn't just mess up, he fucked up terribly, he knows it, based on the name she knows it too, (and left him), and he probably figures the only way he can save or salvage what is possibly a really good relationship is to come out with a strong mea culpa and admit how badly he did, and tell her how badly he feels for what he's done. For content of the lyrics of this song, I think he must have done something really horrible, like cheated on her so blatantly that it was on the level of Former California Governor Ahnohld Brawnsheweiger** who knocked up the maid and probably had numerous tacky affairs with groupies too.

The Neutrals
* Bertie Higgins, Key Largo. Him and his girl had everything together, and for some reason they've grown apart or broke up. Doesn't really say why, just emphasizes all the good things, especially that their relationship was like the real life case of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Apparently it worked, too, a DJ mentioned once that this song got Higgins his girlfriend back.
* Rupert Holmes, The Pińa Colada Song. I'm not really sure whether to just classify this as neutral or "the end," except "the end" songs tend to indicate an irreparable or at least final breach of the relationship. In this song, he puts an ad in the newspaper (today it would be a posting on Craigslist; would be interesting to hear a version of the song redone to indicate that the guy used Craigslist instead of putting an ad in the paper), indicating how he wants to find another lady because the relationship with his current lady has lost its spark, then discovers that the woman he goes to meet in a bar is his current old lady, and discovers that they had shared interests they'd never even discussed. ("I never knew / That you like Pińa Coladas / Or getting caught in the rain...")

The End
* Dido, White Flag. Dido is telling how she knows she can't fix what has happened. "I know I left too much mess and destruction to come back again." But she knows she will still love him even though she won't be able to see him any more. She will let go, eventually, and go on with her life, but a piece of him will still remain a part of her forever.
* The Free Movement, I've Found Someone of My Own. A guy's girlfriend is making indications about something, so he confronts her to find out she's been cheating on him. Then he tells her that she doesn't need to really feel bad, he's been cheating on her too, and, with no anger or sadness, they just split up. I always thought this song was funny, because she's dreading to tell him she's found someone else, and she didn't realize he'd already done the same thing himself. They were held together as a couple by sheer inertia. Either that, or duct tape, anyway.
* Gail Garnett, We'll Sing in the Sunshine. She's admitting that she's going to be his girlfriend for a year, then move on. Never really says why. Whether it's that he's only going to be around temporarily or she is, or she only has one year to live and doesn't want him to remember the suffering, just the happy moments. Also seems to imply for some reason of hers (that is not stated) she can't be his lover for more than a year.
* Bonnie Raitt, I Can't Make You Love Me. A somber melody emphasizes that this is the end of the relationship, and that it will end, "Morning will come and I'll do what's right / Just give me til then to give up this fight / And I will give up this fight." but she wants to remember just once more how good what they had, was.
* Merilee Rush or Juice Newton, Angel of the Morning. She realizes what they had was what it was, a one-night stand, and while she wishes it can go on further, she's not going to pretend that it's anything more than what it was, a pleasant diversion.

I really had trouble with The Apologetics, as there aren't too many of those I can remember, Baby, Come Back stands out as the most obvious one.

** Arnold Schwarzenegger is in character as Jack Slater in the movie The Last Action Hero, and discovers he*'s actually a character in a movie, so he's trying to refer (badly) to the real name of the actual actor who plays him.
