I like it... by Lurker 340924 03/05/2014, 9:26pm PST
But I can understand your complaints, since my Megaman bender pretty much ruined a whole mess of platformers coming out of Steam now. My reference points for this were the Shadow Warrior reboot (boo), Serious Sam 3 (boo), Hard Reset (okay!), and Gunslinger (yay!).

-As far as the art and enemies go, I don't mind the design since everything's simple enough to run just fine on my aging game laptop. If I wasn't on a machine in its final months, I'd probably be more critical of the cheapo explosions. I was still happy when I got a mine mod for my machine gun and covered a room in giant purple spheres.

-What I DO hate is the fact that there's absolutely no difference in enemy behavior. Everything will turn, approach, and shoot at you. There's no coward bots that run away and pew pew backwards or dive bomb bots that do strafing runs. I can't think of a single game that DOESN'T switch things up. Did Quake 2 do this? That would make sense, since the guys who made Risk of Rain copied DOTA to a fault (in that case, having full support characters in a game that's primarily single player). This also means that some of the weapons/perks are objectively better than the rest (I only have 4 guns and 7 perks unlocked, but that's how it looks so far) since you'll only be thrown into a few different scenarios.

-The quirky dialogue didn't annoy me as much since I adamantly refuse to read any review longer than one page. It's a one-time joke once you realize what's going on, so you're supposed to chuckle once then turn off the story completely. It makes sense that most of the trilby hats would spoil it. I think Jerry summed this up when he talked about how games are defined by rules.

-Do you think you were also offended by the suggestion that this is an FPS bullet hell? Are there any other FPSes you could recommend besides The First Encounter?
