Sure, there's been a lot of questionable stuff done in the name of "fighting terrorism". (The second US invasion of Iraq is probably the single biggest example of this.)

But you can't reduce terrorism to a financial calculation. The goal of terrorism is to use fear to control people. So if some country supports cause X that the terrorist doesn't like, he "makes an example" of someone or some group of people from that country. A good example of this is the beheadings ISIS has been carrying out lately.

If you want a concrete example, see here:

Excerpt:
> Having released some 46 Turkish hostages, because "Turkey refused to agree

> swinging in its first 'official' statement since President Obama unveiled
> his 'strategy' for "degrading and destroying" them, with a call for all
> followers of Allah to make the coalition campaign the "last crusader
> campaign," and calls Obama "vile", more foolish than Bush, and a "mule of
> the Jews." Warning Americans and Europeans that "you will pay a great
> price, when your economies collapse," ISIS blasts Kerry, "the
> uncircumcised old geezer," for his "false arguments." The statement

> American or European - especially the spiteful and filthy French - or an
> Australian, or a Canadian, or any other disbeliever from the disbelievers
> waging war, including the citizens of the countries that entered into a
> coalition against the Islamic State, then rely upon Allah, and kill him in
> any manner or way however it may be."

So basically it is about intimidation and control. It's like saying "the Mafia only kills a few guys a year, I don't see what the big deal is." The guys the mafia kills are trying to do something like prevent the mafia from dumping toxic waste without a permit, or stop them from holding up shopkeepers, etc. People who really might have made a positive difference.

Same thing here. If we let terrorists control the debate, then we've already lost. There are already TV networks too cowardly to show South Park's episode that included Muhammed.

As I said earlier, there have been a lot of dumb things done in the name of the "war on terror." I'm not trying to justify all that. But there have also been some smart things. We really do need intelligence on these people who want to do us harm. And we really do need the abilty to project military force across the globe.
