the first thing they learned from the magical books was the GPS coordinates of Norad. Then later his daughter said she decoded the message into something different. Huh? Do the GPS coordinates of Norad and the word "STAY" decode to the same thing in binary? At the end of the movie, when McGarnagle is using bibliocode to talk to his daughter the coordinates don't come up. Sooooo....how does that work out? Why did the coordinates come up?

He writes STAY with the books when he arrives in the time thing presumably out of regret and a desire to return home, then when he realizes what is happening he writes the coordinates with the dust, he even asks the robot for them.

I believe you're right about this and I forgot.

Why was it EVEN necessary to mention McBane was the BEST pilot they ever had? Could that BE any more hackneyed, and it would have been just fine and totally true if they said he was the only living trained pilot with both real flight and real space flight experience.

I think the latter implies the former. He's the only one with experience making him the best.

Technically you're right about the latter implying the former in that he's the best living pilot they have right now, but I specifically remember Michael Caine saying he was the best pilot the program ever had even when they were still doing space missions. It's a minor gripe, sure, but I did say I was nitpicking.

Matt Damon's character irrationally ignoring and overriding 80 million security warnings and automatic lockdowns has to be one of the dumbest and most infuriating movie moments in the last 10 years.

Space sickness!?

I bitched about this in another thread, I think one about The Thing remake, where movies have people act irrationally stupid to create drama or move the plot along. To me, that's exactly what happened here. They needed to get McConaughey into the black hole so they used Damon's character turning on them, but to get there they wrote into the script having 50,000 warnings interrupting and blocking Damon to tell him, "DON'T DO THIS YOU'LL DIE," and he ignored them beyond all capacity for me to buy into it. Like so much of the movie, it just felt lazy and rushed.
