I've beaten Elite, I've dabbled in the frontier games, I've played about a third of Freelancer before getting bored, I was embarrassingly taken with Darkstar One for about 3 days, GOG fucked up and accidentally sold me Starpoint Gemini 2 for 9 cents, and I've watched a number of E:D Let's Plays.
This game, and its subgenre, seriously does not interest me. I have no patience for "commuting" in videogames, and I'm just about done with grinding. The guys doing let's plays are breathlessly yammering on and on about how wonderful the game is, but everything I see them doing in the game looks depressingly boring. It's prettier than any other Elite-clone I've ever seen, that's for sure, but so frigging what when the only thing that happens after you fly into the beautifully rendered space station is an ugly orange window obscures the graphics to tell you in plain text that futuristic drywall is going for a premium?
More and more I'm looking at videogames as games and not as semi-interactive movies. Bridge is a deeper game than Go Fish, and playing Bridge with a "Dora the Explorer" themed deck of cards doesn't turn it into a children's game, or vice versa. That's my point of view, and from that angle E:D comes up short while Freespace 2, much to my frustration, hasn't had any competition in over 15 years. |
