I don't want to bash it too much because hardly anyone tries to do these kinds of movies anymore, BUT
what was the point of hijacking the drone. He said the fuel cell could power the farm and loaded it into his pickup and everything, but after that I don't remember it being relevant for the rest of the movie. He didn't even bring it up to the gubmint.
No clue. So much of this movie could have been cut. Like you said it felt like an HBO series that got condensed into a movie. It felt like they could have cut two-thirds of the beginning on Earth. Blight, dust. GOT IT.
When they were approaching the wormhole one of the astronauts asked Mclusky to stop spinning so they could see it better, which would have disabled the ship's gravity but it didn't. Whoops!
This reminds me of other stuff. It felt like they were setting up either for the black guy to crack (they don't test astronauts for motion sickness? especially when your ship is going to be constantly spinning?) or for the robots to go berserk. The berserk robots would fit into the rest of the movie trying to be 2001 (Earth gets signal from outer planets, they go visit a big black object containing a higher intelligence, guy gets sucked into trippy tunnel before the intelligence tries to communicate with him.
And why did they bother to have a scene where they took him to his recreated house that he was in for 2 seconds before going to see his daughter and then stealing a spaceship to fly away in?
Why was Anne Hathaway still the same age as him? 90 years had passed, humanity had enough time to convert the gravity formula into launching tons of space station to migrate people off Earth, were parked right at the wormhole, had ships advanced enough that a tiny little one man scout apparently had the range to reach her planet, and no one had gone and checked on her? She had left the black hole while Matty McC stayed inside.
Other stuff:
Time passed on the water planet one hour = 7 years. The robot said the engines would take 45 minutes to clear out, then 23 years had passed when they got back? It was crazy stupid to land there in the first place with that going on. Other crazy stupid water planet bit: risking the entire ship to retrieve the recorder when the planet was obviously unfuckingsuitable for a colony. What the shit was up with that planet anyway? Entirely covered by 2 feet of water? Giant tsunamis traveling for dozens of miles in 2 feet deep water?
We have the know how to send manned deep space missions and gravity-defying giant stations, but nothing to counter a crop blight?
You could see all the twists coming a mile away. A black hole that bends time? Oh, it's going to be them sending those signals back in time. The 2nd planet is frozen solid? Oh, the astronaut lied and just sent the signal to be rescued. |
