I'm not trying to argue anything about private-sector unions (although those have their problems too), but just against public-sector unions. What is the difference between congressmen voting themselves a pay raise, and firefighters or police refusing to work until the public gives in to their demands? It's only one step above the military deciding it needs higher pay and getting it at the point of a gun... something that happens a lot in banana republics the world round.
And yeah, if you want to have that discussion, I think cops in SOME parts of the US are in great need of reform. There are some really well run police departments, but there are also some very shitty ones. Body cameras would be a great improvement in a lot of cases. And we don't need to give them tanks and other military gear. The fact is, the "no-knock" warrants and SWAT teams breaking down doors have gotten out of hand. The fourth amendment is a joke these days.
Elementary teachers should never get tenure. They're not doing research, they're just public servants doing a job. And if they do a bad job, they should be fired. It is not fair to give preferential treatment to teachers just because they've worked at the school longer. People should be paid and hired according to their actual merit... a concept the US used to be believe in, back the "glory days" you seem to like to talk about. |
