Either the DIR-655 router is a piece of shit or I am by Ice Cream Jonsey 03/16/2015, 8:17am PDT
Girlfriend has some Samsung Android phone with about a million hits when it comes to why it won't stay connected to WiFi. But then her original iPad started having problems, and last night the 360 did as well.

The PROBLEM is as follows. Keep in mind that every device has their own reserved IP address.

- Reset the router
- Everyone connects through WiFi and life is great.
- Devices begin to power down, or go to sleep or (like for the 360) get turned off.
- When they wake up or get powered on again, they can't connect to WiFi, and while there's no such thing as error reporting in the world of routers, the behavior is that of devices with reserved IP addresses being unable to grab their IP addresses. It's like the ghost of their previous connection stops a new one.

I have a side rant about the 360 I'll post after my sig.

I think the DIR-655 is just a piece of shit. It might be me, but I don't think so. The range is fucking awful, I've found at least two bugs on my own in the latest firmware (later confirmed to be actual bugs that I guess they'll just never fix) and I didn't even half-ass learning about it. I read up on every single setting and I've gone through all the obvious ones. It has a "Q0S Engine" that, as far as I can tell, brings your connection down to 180 kilobytes per second and does nothing else. Why even have that there? You might as well have a checkbox for "emits poison."

So fuck it, I bought this: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router

Anyway, I've tried to awkwardly come up with a better description of what the DIR-655 was doing, but I dunno. "IPs not reconnecting properly"? "Unable to reconnect after sleep"? "The DIR-655 doesn't come with a small stool and noose"? I'm kind of intellectually curious as to what the problem is called, but I'm also looking forward to catapulting it into the city trash after Amazon Prime does its thing this week with the new router.

the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey

MICROSOFT IS A PIECE OF SHIT ADDENDUM: So we signed up for a year of Xbox 360 Gold a year ago. The 360 had been whining about trying to charge us again for it. But now is not a good time for us to drop $35 on something we barely use.

So we tried to watch a movie last night. This is an .AVI or .MP4 file on a flash disk. I start the 360 and it says, essentially, "Hey, I've been trying to charge you for two weeks for 360 Bing for Live Gold but you still haven't given us a non-expired card. You're locked out of getting on-line at all now." There was NO OPTION to go back to silver through the console. None.

These greasy, desperate fucks wants you to fucking call them up if you forget to turn off auto-renew. Which, as an adults with my own problems, I forgot to do a year ago. And I'm not calling Microsoft at 9pm on a Sunday night to watch Arlington Road. And.... AND the best part is - the fucking thing doesn't NEED to go on-line at all for video. Every time we try to play a movie I got from a torrent site, it phones home. What a piece of shit. It says it needs to download a codec, but it doesn't. That's just what it says when you try to watch a movie off external media without an internet connection. The 360 is the biggest piece of shit in the history of consoles and Microsoft's incompetent fucks getting involved in the console space has ruined the experience of living on Earth.
