It sort of depends on people's attitudes. by blackwater 03/24/2015, 12:53am PDT
If you've been working at a place for a while, it's easier to be a mentor because you will just naturally know a lot of things that people will want to ask you. And maybe they would ask you for some advice as well. I think it's harder for people who are just joining a company, unless they are joining at a pretty senior position. I do enjoy mentoring people but the initiative has to come from them.

I also think that truly good programmers are born, not made. It's hard to describe, but the code that someone who is young and inexperienced would create is very different than the code which someone who is just fundamentally no good would write. A good programmer can write good code in any language, and probably wants to write the code, even if there is existing code that is working fine. A bad programmer will never write good code, only good enough code. And probably doesn't want to write the code, and will make some excuse in an interview for how pseudocode is good enough.

Hiring is a big part of a company's corporate culture. If you feel like there's maybe one bad person on a team of many, then sure maybe tough it out. If you feel like you're the smartest person in the room, then I would say get the hell out of there (unless you're also the best paid person in the room). You can't even change one person-- you ought to know that from your past relationships. You're not going to change a company, unless you're Rupert Murdoch's son and the boss has gotten you a seat on the board. In which case, why the hell are you reading caltrops? Is it just for the TDARCOS section?
