Mid-80s you had -- just on the PC -- Flightmare, Chopper Commando, Sopwith, Moria and then later getting into EGA and VGA games we had the Commander Keens, Scorched Earth, EGA Trek, I-0, Stunts and so forth. Games made by one person were awesome.
By 2007 it all went to shit. I don't know when exactly, but definitely by 2007. The same kind of piece of shit journos we have today wrote what was essentially ad copy for their friends' games. There HAD to be a community around "indie games," and all web-based communities except this one are shit. This meant that it was time to vote "game of the show" to an unfinished game that your buddy made and you had to suck the right dicks if you weren't in the clique. It might have been primitive times, but BBS and floppy distribution was a meritocracy. I'm not using my download credits or burning through a floppy disk on freeware if I got the sense it sucked.
Game journalists as a whole have been the worst thing to happen to games. Worse than DRM, pre-sales, EA, Kotrick, Lincoln, Lieberman, anything else.
Things should be getting better as it's getting easier to find great, niche games without using the mainstream game writers. It would be nice if Caltrops had a searchable database of recommended indie games.
