I'm going off a 20 year old memory, but there were like 5 steps prior having to convert everything to base 6. Spock gives you a couple paragraphs of backstory on the way to the planet, mentioning in there that the civilization used a base 6 numerical system. You go through a bunch of areas, come across something that requires a number, piece it together based off a bunch of other hints, but the number doesn't work. THEN you have to remember back to Spock's speech way back at the beginning of the mission (I don't think they ever mentioned base 6 again after that) that they used base 6, and convert the answer you came up with to that.
