Wow, some really great roguelikes have come out in FTL's wake and Ironcast is one of the better ones.

It's a mix of FTL and Puzzle Quest with steampunk mechs. France is invading England and you have X number of days/missions to gather XP and upgrades before their boss mech reaches London and the two of you duke it out. The mechs are beautifully puppet-animated in 2D with great reaction effects that communicate the impact of their weapons. Mechs consist of two weapon systems, a shield system, and a drive. Their systems can (and should) be targeted individually and they're all fueled by the Match-3 game. The Match-3 game involves drawing a line through matching gems in all 8 cardinal directions to collect that amount of resource, plus an XP bonus for really long lines.

A strong protip is that it's better to spend resources getting your ammo capacity to a multiple of 3 before upgrading to better weapons.

The major ding against the game is that it suffers from minor unlockable cancer. After every game, win or lose, you earn "Global" XP that at first unlocks new mechs, gear, and pilots, but later gives percentile bonuses to HP, XP, money, and I'm beginning to wonder if it's at all possible to beat the final boss without all those bonuses.

Really fun game, and I highly recommend it. Just don't mix it up with "Ironclad Tactics" the other indie puzzle game with steampunk mechs, which I found disappointing. It's easy to avoid that other one because the art looks like it was drawn by one of Penny Arcade's ghosts.
