The Ribbon: It wasn't good at launch in Office. It wasn't good when I got used to it. It isn't good now.
I may have said this before, but the only nice thing I can say about the Ribbon is it changed my point of view when I do UI development. It made me realize how stupid tiny toolbar buttons with icons are most of the time, because most of the time it's impossible to decipher what function the icon represents. And had I paid attention to my own user habits, I would have noticed that I nearly always go for the text-based menubar because it's faster and more intuitive to find what I'm looking for. So I only use icons now when there's 6 or less icons for someone to learn (my arbitrary limit) or it's more or less guaranteed that someone will be able to instantly know what an icon means. I also make buttons much bigger now, which makes sense in higher resolutions and easier to click in general.
The new (compared to win 7 at least) settings menu: This is tolerable, and looks like an attempt to be mac-like. Of course, all settings are not exposed via this UI. We can't have that. Anything that doesn't fit in one page just drives you over to the control panel. The UI itself seems like it was poorly rendered via html. It's not very information-dense, and looks to be touch-centric.
I guess I haven't looked at this yet, since I can't remember what it looks like.
Multiple desktops: Finally! Win+Ctrl+Right/Left to shift over. The animation give me a tinge of motion sickness, though, making it the first new Windows feature that has literally made me nauseous. While the Win 8 start menu made me want to throw up, it did not induce vertigo.
Haven't messed with this yet.
Start menu: A cluster of fuck, yet still a vast improvement over 8. It actually looks good, even if it isn't.
An improvement insofar as "it's back."
Search bar: why is this taking up a third of my task bar? Hidden. Also turned off web search - I don't fucking need that when I'm not in a browser.
YES TO BOTH. The search bar being there made me so angry. And for reasons I don't fully understand, particularly because it's on the left-hand side of the screen.
Chrome: UI chrome, not the browser. I miss translucent window dragbar areas. The sea of white at the top of windows looks like shit.
Yeah, I don't get why they went away from Aero glass which was really nice. It's like the only window chrome I've ever really liked. Whoever convinced everyone at MS to buy into that retarded 1980s monochrome look needs to be shot. Probably some asshole thinking they could piggyback on nostalgia.
IE Edge: They almost nailed this. What's there is a really solid core with some interface niggles. I specifically hate the url bar being auto-hidden on new tabs with a search box being down in the middle of the page. The fuck? Back to the good - it's goddamn fast. Google's Octane 2 javascript benchmark scored higher on Edge than Chrome. Wow! With a good set of plugins, this could have serious legs. I really can't believe how good of a job Microsoft has done with this.
Yes, add the search box on new tabs to my list of complaints. For no reason at all, let's move address bar. I might also be the only person who hates unresolved addresses being redirected to a list of search results. I prefer a PAGE NOT FOUND, honestly. I turned all that shit off in Internet Explorer, but my ISP started intercepting unresolved addresses and sending me to a search page anyways. >:(
Other than that, I also like Edge. If they'd fix all my complaints, it'd be great.
Then if every website on earth would stop sending gigabytes of animations and javascript and streaming video it'd be even better. |
