of how puzzlingly tedious design decisions made it through.

You start off with a single (virtually unarmed) scout unit and an HQ. You cannot do anything but build a refinery at first. This drains 800 of 1000 of your starting money. After you build a refinery, you cannot do anything but build a factory, which costs 200. This is all your starting money. You cannot do anything else but scout with your one starting unit in the mean time.

The refinery takes 30 seconds to build. The factory takes 30 seconds to build. This isn't Starcraft where you make decisions of whether to early scout with a worker which sacrifices income, to build a spawning pool at 6 drones or 10, or anything else. They are literally zero options to do anything while you wait for that refinery and factory to build. It's like starting a game of Starcraft with no workers and 50 minerals. What the shit else are you going to do?

So why not just start the game with the first refinery already built? Or even the first factory too? Even The Goo has nothing to do in the first minute as they wait for the Mother unit to absorb resources.

Another example: They streamline refinery income by automating the harvesters as long as you build a refinery then an extractor on the resource. It will produce the same income regardless of the distance from the refinery (only the initial dropoff will be delayed). So cool it's designed not to worry or micromanage crap, except...the income is lower if you build the extractor on the edge of the resource pool instead of the middle. Each pool can only support one extractor, so what was the point of this? Why not just automatically build it in the middle? Depending on the map, some pools have an extremely picky optimal sweet spot within a single millimeter.

Stupid
