The pricing of houses here is roughly correct by Commander Tansin A. Darcos 10/30/2015, 8:52am PDT
I used to read newspapers for a Washington DC clipping service, circa 1990. One of the newspapers I read was the Billings Gazette, the local paper for the capital city of Montana. The editor was telling a story in an editorial about housing prices, in which he was trying to hire another reporter because there was enough news he needed another one. He was interviewing a reporter who flew in from Los Angeles.

One of the questions the editor asked him was how he could afford to take a pay cut (he was offering about 1/2 of what the guy made in L.A.) He said that his house, in a not very good part of Los Angeles County, would sell for about $300,000 (more than he owed on it), and he could buy a bigger house than he owned now, in Billings for about $100,000. Leave the crime, smog and high pressure of Southern California for a simpler life and still do work he loves, yeah, he could stand that.

The editor pointed out that for some small businesses in the area, you could buy the business and the business owner's house for $300,000.
