I sort of enjoyed the world-building at the beginning. It reminded me of the old sci-fi epics of the 70s, where space was still cool and optimism wasn't a dirty word. Like a lot of people commented, the main character captures a military drone which is kind of cool... but then this plot thread goes nowhere.
Then the plot got ridiculously long and complicated like all other recent Hollywood movies. (The scientist doesn't really plan on saving the people on earth but claims that he does? WHAT A TWEEST!) Matt Damon wants to kill the main character because... he has space madness, or something. I don't know. WHAT A TWEEST! The main character flies into a black hole? WHAT A... well, you get the idea.
I guess they were going for the old Buck Rogers style of cool space movie, where you have a two-fisted protaginist doing cool stuff in space. And to be fair, the movie does kind of capture that spirit, as much as you can in the 2010s when every woman has to be a STRONG INDEPENDENT WOMAN and every kid has to be a PRECOCIOUS BUT LOVABLE PRODIGY with no trace of human qualities.
But the writing is just a little bit too lazy to work, even for Buck Rogers. The ending is a big deus ex machina that just feels... forced. At least they didn't try to set themselves up for a sequel. |
