Trailers made this look like some trying too hard inappropriate comedy like Bad Teacher or Sex Tape or jesus christ Cameron Diaz, There's Something About Mary was over 15 years ago.
But the movie is actually one of the best dark comedies ever made. They don't shy away from Billy Bob Thorton being an alcoholic husk of a human being rather than just making it a wacky character trait. A lot of the gags aren't funny on paper, but Thorton, Tony Cox, Bernie Mac, and John Ritter just make them work.
Big warning: Netflix has the theatrical release (or the Bad(der) Santa DVD release, I can't tell). You want to ignore that and go download the director's cut. It is VASTLY superior. So many stillborn or dragging scenes in the theatrical version that are cut, altered, or trimmed by the director's cut. |
