Do you really think paying me twice my SF-based company's salary is going to motivate me to relocate to a Dakota or Wyoming or Oklahoma? Fuck no. Not sure about double, but I've certainly read about offers being fairly competitive to entice workers from Cali. As-is their current salary could easily outright buy a place in OK, ND, SD, WY within a couple years. Add in a signing bonus, and that seems like being put on easy street to me.

Guy working in tech in Silicon Valley here. Unless a company was willing to pay me enough to let me retire early[...] Somebody, who's likely, getting paid twice or more the national average doesn't have it good enough already. Honestly, I'm not sure how they expect to retire given the current situation with cost of living always going to eat earnings.

Might not be pretty when the current crop of 'rock star' programmers face the reality that they are expendable for new grads/visa workers.
