Xenoblade Chronicles X impressions by Rafiki 01/11/2016, 2:30pm PST
I've wondered why most games always make everything within relatively normal human scale instead of embracing non-realism and making their imaginary world super-gigantic. Xenoblade does exactly that and on the one hand I love it. Right out of the gate there's a world with a massive surreal landscape and super dinosaur-sized enemies. On the other hand, when you run up to fight one of these you can just about see the top of their toes, which makes it hard to really appreciate the size because you can't take in the whole creature up close and moving the camera with a control stick is clumsy. You can zoom the camera way out to see everything, but then you lose the sense of size. Maybe when VR evolves to fully envelop your field of view and let you turn your head to look independently of movement it can fill that gap.

So far, the game seems styled like an MMO but in a single player context. The combat has an auto-attack, and you have an ability bar with assignable abilities that you can use on a cooldown. You have party members that you can't really control, but you can coordinate with them somewhat to do combos. You get quests and go skipping across the landscape to a location to complete them. I haven't gotten anything as banal as "collect 20 hyena hides" but I'm not far into the game yet. Apparently you can also join a multiplayer party to take on bosses in a 4-man dungeon, but I haven't gotten that far.

The writing is awful, the acting bad, and the cutscenes are in desperate need of a fucking editor because they never end. The Youtube comments make me feel like dying.

I hate games that have overbearing tutorials that constantly interrupt and take control away to explain every little detail. This game has a bare minimum of explanation, but there's so much to understand that the lack of explanation is bewildering. You pretty much have to read the manual.

I don't have my Robotech mech yet, so I can't comment on it.

I didn't play the original Xenoblade Chronicles so I can't compare, but so far I'm expecting this game to turn out slightly above average and probably would have worked better as an online MMO.
