Original Title: In this thread, Paul mocks mentally ill people.
Fair enough, it's his turn I guess.
See, this is the reason I refer to the alleged people who infest Caltrops as "Cretinous Reprobates," because too many of you either can't read, can't think, or have clearly flawed reasoning systems.
I did not say, "if you don't think being a moron is funny, check this out," I said "if you don't think being batshit insane is funny, check this out."
Being insane has several different reasons including misunderstanding reality, being delusional, becoming traumatized by an horrific event, or poisoned by environmental contaminants. Many of these can be temporary, treatable or curable. Mental illness is not necessarily in that class of condition.
Believing that the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, or the Easter Bunny are real is a delusion. Because children often have trouble from distinguishing reality from fantasy we consider it cute, and something they'll grow out of. It's also not their fault because adults are the ones that filled their head with that garbage, knowing they're gullible and easily fooled. But if you're an adult and you still believe these things, you're clearly delusional. And if you went around trying to convince people that they are real, people would be justified in saying you're batshit insane. That doesn't mean in all other respects you might be a perfectly reasonable and competent practitioner of whatever your trade is. You just believe in some crazy things.
The subject of the video I pointed to deals with people who believe other people have characteristics which represent those of other animals which are not present in human beings. If you want to believe that, just as much if you want to believe in God, that's your right. It's when you come out in public and essentially claim these things to be factual and true to life despite having no evidence whatsoever to prove it, that's when you're basically delusional. When you want to try to convince other people that your delusion is real, despite having no evidence, that's when you're batshit insane.
Almost everyone has or had delusions. Belief in God, or praying to Them, for example, is so commonplace that the DSM IV does not classify it as a mental condition because if more-or-less everyone believes that concept you can't declare the whole populace to have a medical condition even if it might be correct. Believing that God actually responds to you personally, is, however, recognized as delusional thinking. It also depends on whether the other person agrees that your God is on the List of Legitimate Delusions that they find acceptable. Believing in the existence of Yahweh, or Allah, or whatever the Jews believe in, is usually okay. Believing in the existence of Thor, or Wotan, or any of the Norse Gods, gets you some strange looks. Believing in the existence of the Flying Spaghetti Monster or the Invisible Pink Unicorn - if you tell people - will usually get them to think you're just kidding. If they thought you were serious, they'd probably think - or even admit - that you're batshit crazy.
Which is true, because your favorite delusion is not on their "List of Acceptable Delusions."
