Re: Caltrops predictions for the near future of gaming? by Rafiki 02/21/2016, 8:51pm PST
At best they'll put out the next Saturn that will quickly fail.

Guess we'll find out since they're supposed to release their new console by the end of the year. That's how hard the Wii U flopped, btw. At the very least, they're supposed to reveal it at E3 and I'm pretty sure I saw an article where development kits were sent out late last year. Supposedly the hardware is at least on par with PS4/Xbox One, but there's 0 detail on what that means. Here's what it means: Tetris and Pac-Man are still better games than nearly everything ever invented and they'll run on a TI-83 calculator from 1992, so it's safe to say that games won't be more fun. Instead, a Nintendo console will finally be capable of rendering Kevin Spacey so companies may be willing to actually develop games for it. Except probably not because they all bitch about having to compete with Nintendo because in 30 years they apparently still can't make something better than the 19th fucking Zelda update.

3DS out for over 4 years and has barely passed 50% of PSP sales

So I looked up sales. 3DS sold 58 million in 4 years, vs. PSP's 80 million in 10. So more like 72% of sales. And how is almost 60 million a flop? You are the WORST analyst. I've seen kids playing 3DS when I travel. I leave Street Pass on in the airport, and never leave without it flagging a bunch of hits.

Possibly this will be the last generation of consoles as we know it?

Nope.

Once they wise up and discover the concept of a Steam backlog

That's never going to happen. I don't believe the average person gives a shit about old games, unless they're rereleased in an HD remake or they're old and looking for a nostalgia kick. If Steam machines weren't a confusing clusterfuck of 400 hardware variations running on Linux, I might agree with you about consoles being in some kind of danger. The advantage dedicated consoles have is that they're simple. You plug them in, create a user account, and then you can pop a game in and go. The games released for them all work. This lends them to mass public appeal. On the other hand, you can buy a PC and have a high probability of not being able to play newer releases if you didn't pay attention to the specs. Most people won't, because they don't care.

"What do you mean this PC won't play GTA 6? I just bought it last week!"
"Sorry, sir, your computer has on-board graphics only and an i3 Celeron. You need at least an Nvidia Gefore 1020 with 4GB of video RAM and an i7 workstation class..."
*eyes roll back, blood leaks from nose, collapses to the floor"

The average person just does not give a shit about learning the details of PC technology to equip them with understanding what hardware to buy for modern gaming, so consoles are going to be around until PCs adopt Apple's model of 2 possible variations, Apple somehow wrests control of PC gaming, or Valve standardizes a single Steam Machine that's as plug and play as a home console. I don't see any of those things ever happening.
