Chrome is more popular? oh shit, we better make our browser look like chrome, having a start page with annoying square start panels for websites, tabs at the top of the screen instead of menus, and so on.
Chrome doesn't have browser extensions? We better get rid of them too, except for shitty Javascript shims which can't do anything that a site with an IFRAME and some Javascript couldn't do.
Mozilla blew millions on trying to create a new operating system for mobile phones called Firefox OS. Of course it never worked well, because it was based on HTML5 and Javascript, a combination which is way slower and more power-hungry than any of the competing technologies. Even if it had worked well, nobody wants a new OS with no applications.
Meanwhile, Mozilla killed its email client, Thunderbird, something that at least a few people liked and used.
Mozilla has been trying to position itself as the principled choice, "standing for the open web." But every time a big choice comes up where they have to choose between their own interests and the open web's, they chicken out. For example, they added support for patented H.264 video decoding, after saying that web standards should never include patent-encubmered codecs.
I definitely agree that firefox is crashy and weird compared with any of the major alternatives. It's like everyone else on the road is driving a modern car, and you're driving a vintage Ford Pinto. Every time you shift, the transmission shudders like it's going to fall about. If you drive more than 50 miles per hour, it sounds like you're in a wind tunnel and the windshield rattles.
The best case scenario at this point is that a few years from now they are remembered as a company where some of the early Rust developers worked. |
