| Good: A generally solid game from the get go. Nothing is truly broken and while colony management does get dull after awhile, what 4X game does it not get dull in? Fleet combat is fun to watch and subject to more variables than GalCiv but still takes a hands off approach. I enjoyed all 40 hours I put into it non-stop this week.
Bad: Sector Management can be teeth-gnashing for some OCD people who can't stand that the AI is incapable of squeezing every last bit of efficiency out of their sectors. I appreciated them though. AI can appear to be a bit passive but from my playthrough my interpretation was that the AI doesn't stupidly strike you when it knows it doesn't have a chance of winning. It waits until you're stuck in a war with one of your other neighbors, and THEN attacks. Still, a bit too dull/passive for some people. The AI is way too unreactive to the late-game galactic threats as well. At the moment corvette spam is the "I Win" button in games because you can jack up their evasion to 60% with various combinations of loadouts. Ugly: Fighters/bombers are fucking broke as shit at the moment and have a set range of 4-8 making them the shortest range weapons in the game at the moment. The Prethoryn Scourge (Zerg/Tyranids in late-game) are broken so that you can never really get rid of them. Planets they infest are unrecoverable, your only options are to orbitally bombard them into dust basically but at the moment whatever switch/trigger is supposed to convert it from infested to barren is broken at the moment. There's a mod that fixes it currently out. Paradox has been all over reddit and says they already have fixes in their internal build for some of this stuff. I assume they're waiting a bit to gather it all together for patch v1.1. It's already the fastest stelling Paradox game ever so if you want to wait a few weeks to buy it once 1.1 releases it won't hurt anything. But definitely put it on your Must Play list. I haven't had this much fun with a 4X since Sword of the Stars and Master of Orion 2. |
