I think what pisses me off the most about this whole thing is how dishonest the Leave side's arguments have been.
There were just outright lies like this:

In reality the amount Britain paid into the EU was small, after considering the rebates it got. Even Nick Crafts, a pro-brexit academic, estimates that it's not more than 7 billion pounds a year, or 260 pounds per household.
Then there were all the arguments about how Brexit would free Britain up to "open up to the rest of the world." These were also lies-- the exact opposite was true, since now Britain needs to negotiate a trade deal with every other nation in the world separately. That will take years and is not likely to lead to a more "open" result than Britain has now with its EU trade agreements.
Then there were the arguments about how Brexit would let Britain slip loose from burdensome EU regulations. The Brexiters made it sound like the ghost of Margaret Thatcher would be walking the halls of Whitehall, cutting red tape and bureaucracy everywhere. In reality, neither the Tories nor Labor really wants to deregulate anything. The British public is not clamoring for less regulation. And the UK will have to adopt most if not all EU regulations about products and services, if it wants to continue trading with them. So once again, the whole thing was a big fat lie.
Then there is the argument that Britain needs to seize the day and control its own destiny. It's been the lapdog of Germany and France for far too long! But these arguments are also bullshit. Britain is a member of NATO, which makes it part of the US's sphere of influence. NATO is an organization where the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces decides when to launch the nukes and end the world. The EU is an organization where delegates from various countries meet to standardize the curvature of bananas. Britain is not going to be the big man on campus by leaving the EU but still clinging to the US's skirts.
The only rational argument for Brexit is that the EU's requirement of free movement of people is bringing too many immigrants into the country who won't assimilate and who will change the culture. The left has tried to paint this as a racist argument, but it's not. It's a cultural argument. Even here, there was certainly a better way to restrict immigration than Brexit.
If you still need convincing that Brexit was a disaster, you only need to look at who supported it. Nigel "fucking" Farage, Vladimir "Bad Vlad" Putin, and the Donald. |
