It's because of gerrymandering.
I read this book review and everything came into focus. Of course both parties have become radicalized, since most congressional seats are now "safe." With no real electoral competition, everything becomes a purity test for the party faithful. And so the blue dogs and RHINOs were hunted to extinction.
And now we're finding that neither party can fully control the radicalized factions they created by redrawing the electoral map. Ironically, the Republicans were more successful at redrawing the map, which directly led to the Tea Party and Trump. Things which might ultimately fragment the party. |
