10 Cloverfield Lane (SPOILERS) by Fullofkittens 07/25/2016, 4:40pm PDT
Based on producers' claims that 10 Cloverfield Lane is a spiritual (though not literal) sequel to Cloverfield that "occurs in the same universe," I was expecting something a little different. For one thing - despite the somewhat heavy-handed fan service* - you'd have to stretch reallllllly hard for the two movies to occur "in the same universe" unless that universe also contains Monsters, District 9, Super 8, Alien Nation and maybe E.T.. Namely: movies with aliens in them.

The film's biggest problem: I was expecting the encounter at the end to feel more like Cloverfield and less like the War of the Worlds remake. The alien encounter is pretty dumb, folks. They could have handled it a LOT better; based on the history of the film I get the idea that the final sequence got rewritten at the last minute, which would explain why it feels so rushed. The decently-ok suspense thriller ends too abruptly and it gets too ridiculous too fast, the two parts don't work well together.

PFFT anyway, I would watch John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead read the newspaper aloud to each other, so it wasn't a total waste, but I think I have to render my verdict as negative: good in parts but not overall.

*John Goodman's character works for the satellite company whose falling satellite woke up the Godzilla in Cloverfield, the 7-11 sells the Slush-O that owns that company, and the house is on Cloverfield Lane (get it!?!?) (which doesn't EVEN make it part of the same universe because "Cloverfield" was a code name in the first film).

BTW Monsters is a better movie and is usually on Netflix.
