If you don't have the rule of law, individual rights, and a well-educated population, democracy just makes things worse.
The US's founding fathers understood this clearly and set up things like the Bill of Rights to prevent a tyranny of the majority. They also limited voting to men of property. (At the time, women and men without property were not likely to have any formal education.)
It's pretty easy for democracies to go bad, actually. Look at places like Venezuela where a charismatic leader basically dismantled the economy to give out handouts to his supporters. Or Iraq, where democracy is just a thin veneer over a bunch of warring tribes.
I just hope the US takes its nuclear missiles out of Turkey soon. We should just have a few more nuclear subs. The whole region has been a dumpster fire for decades and it's not worth a drop of American blood. |
