A lot of people in this thread are claiming that stricter gun control laws would have prevented something a terrorist attack like the Orlando shootings from happening (or at least made it a lot less likely).
I do not believe that this is the case, and I already clearly stated the reasons why:
1. Because there are other ways for terrorists to cause mayhem. For example, the guy in Nice who drove his truck into a crowd.
2. Because there are always ways around gun control for someone who is sufficiently determined. All of these Islamic terrorists accept that they're going to die as part of their attack. If you're willing to give up your entire life, you're certainly willing to give up a few grand to pay a smuggler or a crooked cop. And so, the war on guns will end exactly the same way as the war on drugs. In failure.
I believe that gun control is irrelevant to the issue of controlling Islamic terrorism, and that the media's cynical attempt to use it to drum up support for restrictive gun laws is appalling. The obvious things that we should be focusing on are better policing and more effective sharing of intelligence between parts of the government.
Your counterargument is that "gun crimes have gone way down over there." But that has nothing to do with my argument, which is that gun control is irrelevant to preventing terrorism. Crime is not terrorism, although most kinds of terrorism are crimes. The argument that we were debating was specifically whether gun control would prevent terrorism, not about whether it helped with something else.
Even though it's irrelevant to the argument, I can't help but point out that "reducing gun crime" is a pretty silly thing to measure. At least measure something useful like the homicide rate or the number of police who got shot per year, etc. Also you misspelled "because." |
