None of them could admit how awful it got until it was really fucking obvious or years after the fact.

It really was pretty good, at first. I think a good number of writers in the room were always just bad writers adding to the mix, but it all made sense at least and they tried some fun visual metaphors here and there, rare for the time in TV. A lot of people hated when Dexter gets the English girlfriend, but I kinda liked some of the cinematography that season. Dexter meets this fun girl who gives him an actual boner for the first time in his life, but he eventually, o well sure enough, has to kill her because she's not fun-crazy but crazy-crazy. The fan reaction at the time was strange. Women hated this chick universally, I guess the other-woman thing. But poor Dexter, back to faking boners with Rita and killing people, in the end.
I don't know why anyone would get mad at the TWP crowd. This show was tailored for them. Serial killers are classic sad, lonely chick fodder. A man who's hideous but you can see the charming prince inside?

Dexter show was designed with this demographic in mind. Look at how children are shown (too much) throughout the entire series and always with (too much) reverence. Even serial killing is treated like a bad habit, like smoking instead of something that is completely wrong and destroys the lives people who loved those particular murderers he killed. But I agree that there was had a good main actor and enough good writers with the bad to pull it off initially.
I liked the English girlfriend too. She could've been a good foil for Rita and really amplified the angel/devil thing he was struggling with. But no he killed her because....avenging Doakes. The guy he was going to frame for being a serial killer. I would've respected the writers more if Dexter had just admitted he did it because she knew his secret and not tried to use some bullshit ethics to justify it. Can't have him seem like he doesn't have a conscience though and besides that bitch got what she deserved for ruining a happy home! Dexter was let off the hook for every moral choice presented to him.
Yeah after two seasons it's probably enough fucking Dexter.
I'm a fan of Lithgow and Charlotte Rampling but the CSI bullshit and killer-as-dad in between Dexter's interactions with the overarching serial killer is too much when Netflix has better shows. |
