Hyper Light Drifter by Mischief Maker 09/27/2016, 8:36pm PDT
Even though it's a completely different genre, I feel Hyper Light Drifter better delivers on No Man's Sky's promise of a game of wondrous exploration in a world inspired by pulp sci fi covers.

HLD plays like a cross between Zelda 3 and Out of this World with just a pinch of Shadow of the Colossus. Being lost and trying to figure out what's going on in the game's world appears to be a gameplay element so I'll say nothing about the setting.

The game is heavily combat-oriented, but unlike Ys: the Oath in Felghana's super smooth and fast-paced combat, Hyper Light Drifter has a very weighty and deliberate combat style despite the protagonist's ninja-like agility. Frivolous dashes and button-mashing is severely punished. You have a basic three-swing sword combo and a variety of guns at your disposal and can buy several new combat moves in the game's central hub using upgrade packs hidden throughout the game. The further you get in the game, the more heavily populated and crazy the combat sections become. There also is some minimal platforming with the dash technique and a LOT of optional secret hunting. There's also a new game + that retains your new moves and weapons but cranks up the difficulty by drastically reducing your max health.

The pixel art and dynamic music in this game are downright glorious. I've never seen someone squeeze such good production values out of the gamemaker engine before.

I would say that an analog pad is all but mandatory for this game, but if you do insist on mouse-WASD, go to the options menu and change the dash mechanic from "dash toward the mouse" to "Dash with movement keys." Another thing that may be a sticking point for some is the game makes the deliberate choice of a 30fps frame cap to recreate the look of the classic DOS games it's modeled after.

I can confidently recommend this game if you're looking for an immersive mood piece, a tactical action game, or a completionist's macguffin hunter.
