The closer I get to the end, the less sense the upgrade systems make. You get all your weapons all normal like, and weapon upgrade points for killing and finding secrets and doing challenges. Fine, cool. But if, say, you spend 12 on the combat shotgun or pulse rifle thinking that the upgrades will give them game-lasting power, then fuck you! There's absolutely no reason that EVERY weapon upgrade couldn't have been a specific kill challenge (as opposed to just the final mastery one), especially considering this is EXACTLY what Wolfenstein did and it was great and unobtrusive and you were never stuck with useless weapons. Plus, this would actually give you a reason to use something other than the Rocket Launcher/Super Shotgun combo from mid-game on.
And then there's the armor passives AND rune passives AND stat upgrades. One you use armor points collected from around the map, similar to weapon points; one you complete kill challenges; and one is a straight 1 upgrade per collectible. But again, there's no reason that all of these couldn't have been ONE singular Praetor Armor upgrade screen with JUST fun challenge unlocks (again, like Wolfenstein). In fact, the only solid reason I can think of them not doing it this way is that they didn't want to copy their own work too much, lest people call their DOOM remake derivative and unoriginal. |
