I thought one of the guys in this thread that came up when I googled was you, because he was making a lot of the same points. Of course, the only reason I found him is because he beat me to a reference, so maybe he and you and definitely me are all just really good at recognizing the obvious.
While I'm explaining how good I am at recognizing the obvious, I also want to clarify that I have nothing against spic directors. They're just a very credulous people. To them, the key word in magical realism is 'realism'. If you think you watched a Spanish movie that wasn't about God, you probably didn't get it. They also tell jokes like they just read them in a joke book, which explains Sigourney Weaver's outrageous schoolgirl/ghostrape bon mots. It's like they get as far as translating the basic premise into English and assume the mental image of a woman with her dress over her head is going to be enough to make us throw back our sombreros and clutch our big hairy brown bellies in laughter. Honestly, it seemed like the kind of script that probably had a lot of spitting in the first draft. |
