Mafia III by better than Mafia II 11/30/2016, 1:02pm PST
In some ways worse than Mafia I but in other ways better (graphics mainly).

The good parts are the city and characters and atmosphere. Radio DJs talking about real-world and game-world news items. Huge city, lots of interesting neighborhoods, nice weather effects.

The okay parts are the shooting and driving. Standard stuff you'd expect from this kind of game.

The not-so-good part is how much repetition there is, how few things there are to do, and the AI.

You're always breaking locks to get through doorways and it's a fucking boring minigame that you have to do way too often.

There's not much interaction with the world. You pick up collectibles or break into businesses to pick up other collectibles. You 'build a crime empire' but there are no decisions to make. Just shoot everyone in a drug den and then you own a drug den. Shoot everyone in the warehouse and now that's your warehouse.

The enemy AI is not good but not too much worse than other games. Enemies pop out of cover helpfully so that you have a clear shot at them. Sometimes they get caught on the side of a box or spin around in a circle uselessly but that's pretty rare. If you shoot one but don't kill it and then you hide for a few seconds it will forget about you.

The tutorial says that cops will ignore minor traffic infractions but might come after you for serious violations, but that's a lie. You can cartwheel a flaming tanker truck down the sidewalk through a crowd of children and cops will still ignore it. The only time cops come after you is if a bystander witnesses you A. shooting someone or B. breaking into a car and calls the police. I think they just say the cops are watching because people liked that in Mafia 1 and it got left out of Mafia 2, but it doesn't actually happen.

It's much more open world than Mafia 2, you are rewarded for exploration more than Mafia 2, and it looks much nicer than Mafia 2 but otherwise it's the same game. I haven't played Mafia 1 in a while but I feel like it had more things to do.

Overall, a mixture of okay parts and tolerable parts.
