The essay starts off preaching about how the eeeevil Canadian government is trying to infringe the country's freedom of the press by saying "no comment" to reporters (?). Media yenta having a whinge out of the gate. WE'RE UNDER ATTACK, DONATE NOW!
Is "freedom of expression" Canadian for "freedom of speech"? Maybe that was the idea in spirit, but not as strong in reality. There have been mixed results of invoking the maple charter. Bringing us to...
There's some shit in there about Holocaust deniers Both levels of their government has had vendettas against specifics targets: Ernst Zündel, a gay bookstore, filmmakers & video stores (remember those?). "Obscenity" and "Hate Speech" (or propaganda) remain criminal offenses - simply not as strong to go Fahrenheit 451 on all media.
So government monitoring is needed. So we can have all the freedom. And stay on the lookout for social injustices! Like incorrect pronouns. Or people making totally incorrect comparisons to 1984. Is this kind of thinking actually mainstream in Canada? I'm asking for real. The same country that took policy advice from Andrea Dworkin (Rest in Piss)? Hate to say it, but yeah, it isn't just from one Medium lookalike. It's equally true from public servants, students, and other media outlets (even if not to the same degree). Respect those pronouns if you visit, bigot.
My impression is many Canadians are similar to canvassers: looking for attention, ready to spills their guts about some bleeding heart cause, but honestly have little real conviction or skin in the game. |
