Max Headroom sucks. by Pirate DVD Review 12/19/2016, 2:47pm PST In the dark cyberpunk future from the Super Mario Bros movie, crusading TV journalist Edison Carter dies while trying to expose the evil corporation he works for. They scan his brain and upload it to the matrix, creating the first fully functional artificial intelligence: Max Headroom. Then Edison Carter wakes up because it turns out he wasn't all the way dead and he's fine and he breaks the story and Dick gets fired and the corporation isn't so evil anymore and everything's all wrapped up in a neat little package by the end of the first episode. Except Max Headroom is still around, haunting the datanets, being a wisecracking smart alec The Mask to Edison Carter's dull dull boring Stanley Ipkiss. So the rest of the series is just Edison flying around in his Bladerunner flying car regular 1980s news helicopter investigating the most prosaic, underdeveloped future news stories while never saying or doing anything even remotely interesting because the writers are saving their one and a half good lines an episode for Max, whose connection to the plot is usually... nonexistant? He's like the baby on Full House who walks into a room and says "don't have a cow, man" then turns around and walks out again and that's it, back to Danny Tanner running down leads for Wake Up San Francisco. Except Danny Tanner being super lame was a joke, while Edison Carter being super lame is just bad writing. Or maybe not enough writing, was there a strike going on or something? A lot of the dialogue is repeated or just sounds made up on the spot. There's a hot lady news producer but they try so hard not to sexualize her that she might as well not even exist. Her boss is more interesting than she is, again not because of the writing but because he came to work in 1980s racquetball shorts one episode and he had some pretty sinewy thews going on down there for an older gentleman. I'm 100% straight but it was still the most exciting thing that ever happened on Max Headroom.
