He did bring up something else I've been thinking about, which is the ridiculousness of open world games (particularly RPGs) trying to build tension and a dramatic story, and then undermining it by letting me approach it at my leisure.
You come out of a cutscene explaining OH MY GOD, WE'VE GOT TO MAKE IT TO THE TOWN ACROSS THE VALLEY AND WARN EVERYONE THAT THEY'RE ALL GOING TO DIE SO THEY CAN EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY, but then I can just tie up some side quests, grind a few levels, do some exploring to check off objectives on my map, do a bunch of crafting, all while the day/night cycle in the game is indicating like 90 fucking game days have gone by. Then when I actually bother to reach the town, you go into a cutscene where your characters wipe their brow and announce, WHEW, they got there just in the nick of time! All these games want to tell big dramatic stories, and then they're designed to be at odds with themselves.
Incidentally, I just started FF15 and it's an open world 3rd-person action RPG and also a mess with all of these problems and more. |
