Armageddon you wanted to ignore all the infantry units and just concentrate on the more expensive stuff like tanks.
Final Liberation, long range artillery just destroyed everything and you loaded up on that.
Heavy weapons underperform against massed infantry in this game. Even though units move and attack as squads, the rules don't treat them as a conglomerate whole, they shoot and take damage seperately. So if a tank fires a heavy shell at a squad of 5 gretchin, one gretchin will be gibbed and four full-health gretchin remain, there's no carryover damage for overkills. However, if a 3-man tactical marine squad fires 9 weaker shots at the gretchins, the damage is spread out more evenly so dice-willing half the gretchin will be dead. On the other hand if those tactical marines try and use their bolters on a Deff Dred from the front its armor will cause it to barely lose any HP, whereas the tank's cannon will penetrate and do more serious damage.
I've only had one mission with artillery and while the whirlwind has insane range, it only gets one shot per round, is wildly inaccurate to the point of being a danger to your own troops, and it's extremely vulnerable if you don't keep it hidden behind heavy cover.
Finally, you just can't load up on only tanks and artillery. The game randomly selects the list of units you buy your army from and it rarely gives you more than a handful of vehicles. At most they'll make up maybe a quarter of your force. This game operates at a smaller scale than Armageddon and Final Liberation, more like Dawn of War 1's scale. |
