Steamworld: Heist by Mischief Maker 02/02/2017, 2:58pm PST
Surprising gem! I was a big fan of Worms hotseat back in college but once I was out of the dorms the game lost its appeal because singleplayer sucked and online multiplayer sucked even harder (everyone just using ninja ropes and the two best bombs). Steamworld: Heist brings back the fun of Worms in all its scorched earth glory in compelling single player.

It takes place in a future populated by sentient steam-powered robots scrabbling for water in the shards of a shattered Earth with a wild west in space aesthetic. You play a pirate ship captain and the game consists of boarding and raiding randomly generated enemy ships, shooting motherfuckers in the face, stealing all their loot, then hightailing it to the escape pod.

The gameplay is a turn based squad tactics game in a 2D platformer arena. Your dudes get two action points and auto duck behind cover like nu-Xcom. Shooting is a dice-free affair, you adjust your robot's aim bust-a-move style and every bullet that strikes an enemy's body does a specific amount of damage, plus critical damage for headshots. Different weapons have different properties. Your starting pistol has a laser sight and can ricochet around walls to skirt cover, shotguns fire a spread of 1 dmg buckshot pellets, heavy guns fire area-effect grenades with an arcing trajectory, etc. Levels can be replayed multiple times for bonus XP and will have a different randomized layout each time. Your dudes gain special powers as they level up, but their unlocked skills are set in stone. Customization is all about which weapons and accessories you equip them with.

It's a simple game, but incredibly addictive. It also loads in seconds and once you get a real grip on the controls levels can be finished in minutes (and they also save their progress mid-level) so it's a great coffee break game!

Note that if you're buying the main game plus the expansion from gog during this release week sale, add the hat DLCs, too. The package deal actually makes the game cheaper with the hat DLCs included than without.
