FEAR 3 is a bland cover shooter with regenerating health, and you'll probably never use the cover mechanics. You earn points to level up, because why not I guess. The first level seemed promising, with a few locations set up as little winding combat arenas so I thought maybe it would be more like FEAR 1, but every level is just a big long corridor. There's about 6 enemies, but they vary between "melee rush" and "has guns." Grunts are all dumb and can be baited into charging you, and combat is just slowmo + headshot. This is one of the only games with a riot shield that lets you shoot at the same time, and it's so overpowered it feels like cheating. On two boss fights I ran out of ammo and just bashed the boss to death with the shield because they couldn't hurt me. Somehow the graphics are worse than FEAR 2, despite being released 2 years later. They almost completely ditch the horror aspect of the series. This game's idea of horror is string crescendos with random non-threatening hallucinations. Whole sections without enemies that are supposed to scare you, but you'll just sprint straight through them. The level 2 finale bugged out on me. I was supposed to have a big battle against grunts as I fought my way to an army chopper, but none of the enemies spawned so I just safely ran to the end while panicked radio chatter relayed my position. I was playing on the highest difficulty. On the positive side, the game can be completed in less than 6 hours and quickly uninstalled.
