I can read PDF's on my cheap-ass Android tablet or notebook. I just wanted a device to read e-books. Every single user review that compared the two, even if they recommended the Kindle, said the same thing: The Nook has a better screen and is easier to read on. Waterproof and durable. I'm going to go ACTIVIST CONSUMER here and say I also don't want Amazon to eat away at the last bookstore chain so switched to buying books from Barnes and Noble. It is a bit more of a pain in the ass to use Overdrive but not terrible and magazines download automatically.
I might end up with a Kindle when it goes on sale but a lot of the extras (translating text into other languages like Chinese, Wikipedia lookup, monitoring how long someone aka your kids read) is shit that I just didn't need and FUCK paying $20 to remove ads. Kobo Glo also page refreshes too often and for the same price, the Nook is a better reader. The higher end Kindle readers (Voyage, Oasis) cost as much as a tablet.
Speaking of useless shit by Amazon that gets too much attention, the Echo has to be one of the most overhyped products in tech. Maybe it's because I already had a smarthub, but Alexa didn't add much other misunderstanding every other command and having over 10,000 mostly useless skills. Almost anything it does can be done better (Yeah, I can turn off my smart lights. I can also just get some motion sensors and have them automatically go off.) It's basically a souped up alarm clock that spies on you, you can talk to relieve your bitter loneliness, and ask trivia questions. |
